The Racketeer by John Grisham

I'm not sure what to make of the main character in The Racketeer. At the beginning, we find Malcolm in a "club Fed" type prison for money laundering, (which he wasn't really guilty of), missing his wife, his son and his career. And you feel bad for the guy. But by the end, he has shown remarkable ingenuity at doing things that are not exactly legal--involving forged passports, stolen gold, planting drugs and the like. And he doesn't evoke quite so much sympathy anymore. (And you do wonder how he figured out how to do all those things when earlier he hadn't even realized that his client was using him to launder money.) Still, the story is engaging and it definitely moves right along. Not my favorite John Grisham but still an entertaining way to while away a weekend.
