The Girl You Left Behind by JoJo Moyes

Sophie is working in a store in Paris in the early 1900s when she meets artist Edouard Lefevre.
They fall in love and marry--and he paints a portrait of her, a portrait that plays a pivotal role in several lives over the next century. When WWI starts, Edouard goes off to fight and Sophie moves in with her sister Helene in a small town that is soon taken over by the Germans. The Kommandant becomes obsessed with the portrait of Sophie, which leads to a series of misfortunes for the family. The author then fast forwards to the present, where young widow Liv owns the portrait, which is now worth millions. Soon she's embroiled in a nasty court battle with Edouard's heirs over ownership of the portrait.

It's an engrossing story that keeps flipping back and forth between Sophie's life and Liv's--both of which hold your attention. Sophie is desperately trying to reunite with her missing husband and Liv is just as desperately trying to hold on to this cherished gift from the husband she lost.
