Second Watch by JA Jance

In the "story behind the story" at the end of Second Watch, JA Jance explains that since her main character
was getting a little "long in the tooth," it might be time for a prequel, an idea she got from her son. hence this story.

While JP (Beau) Beaumont is heavily medicated after knee surgery, he dreams of the man who saved his life when he was a soldier in Vietnam and of his first homicide case, the death of a college student, that was never solved. He decides to do something about both, tracking down the fiancee of his former lieutenant and reopening the cold case--which sets off a chain reaction of sometimes deadly consequences.

It's an intriguing premise--going back to the beginning. And it works well. Beau is a complicated character who's had an interesting life. And we get to learn a lot more about what makes him tick. Plus it's a good murder mystery. In the prologue, we also find out that the soldier who saved Beau's life in the book was based on a real person that JA Jance went to high school with. Seeing his actual picture makes that story line even more poignant.
