The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

Sarah Grimke is an anomaly in pre-Civil War Charleston, South Carolina. Even at age 11, she thinks slavery is wrong. And when her birthday present is a slave of her own, Hetty (called Handful by her mother), Sarah is appalled and wants her father to grant Handful her freedom. But that is not to be and so begins a lifelong relationship between the two girls.

Handful wants more than anything to be physically free and Sarah wants more than anything to have the freedom to do what she wants--go to a real school, have access to books, and become a lawyer.  And both of them are frequently punished for their stubborn persistence.

I was surprised, when I got to the end of the book, to find that Sarah Grimke was a real person who became a famous abolitionist. It's a fascinating story.
