Ask Bob by Peter Gethers

Dr. Bob Heller is a veterinarian who writes an advice column about pets (hence the title, Ask Bob). He seems more in tune with pets than people. Then he falls madly in love with a girl named Anna. (Their first meeting is hilarious.) Ask Bob is really a book about relationships--with actual families and the people who become a second family to us. Parts of it are laugh-out-loud funny while others are very sad.

I would love to have my book group do this book so we could discuss:
1)Bob's relationship with his manipulative brother Teddy (and what the heck is wrong with Teddy)
2)Bob's relationship with (in my opinion) the very frustrating Camille (and how she might benefit from some therapy)
3)Why so many of the main characters came from such dysfunctional families--and how
some of them seemed to survive it better than others
4) The role pets play in people's lives (see the Dr. Bob letters about pet weight and Bob's own relationships with his menagerie of pets, including an obscenity-spewing bird)

Ask Bob is an enjoyable and thought-provoking read.
