A Star for Mrs. Blake by April Smith

Thousands of American mothers lost their sons during World War I and were unable to visit their graves in France. So in 1929, the US Government created a program that would fund trips to France for these "gold star mothers." April Smith has created a fictionalized account of the journey of some of these women.

Cora Blake lives in Maine and is raising her sister's 3 daughters. But she's never gotten over the death of her only son Sammy. She is joined by wealthy Bobbie, immigrants Katie and Minnie, and first one then another Mrs. Russell (due to a military mix-up). The group is led by recent West Point graduate Thomas Hammond (who was a real person involved with the Gold Star program) and Army nurse Lily. It's a moving story about the real costs of war.
