The Resistance Man by Martin Walker

A hero of the French resistance dies of old age and leaves behind money from a legendary train robbery. Several unoccupied vacation homes in the area are burglarized. And a man is found brutally murdered. Bruno Courreges, the only cop in lovely St Denis, France, thinks all of these seemingly disparate events may be related. On top of all his work responsibilities, Bruno is also dealing with some startling news from his ex-love Isabelle and a serious accident involving his sometime love Pamela. But there's always time for a dinner with friends, a horse ride through the countryside and a training session with a new puppy. Because Bruno knows what's really important in life.

I love this charming series, which always makes me want to call Air France and make a reservation.
