Die a Stranger by Steve Hamilton

This is one of the newer offerings in the "Alex McKnight" series set in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Alex's best friend Vinnie and Vinnie's cousin Buck disappear not long after a shootout involving marijuana smugglers at a tiny local airport in the middle of the night. Alex doesn't believe Vinnie had anything to do with the marijuana smugglers but can't help wondering if his disappearance is somehow involved. When Vinnie's long-missing father turns up to help look for Vinnie, things really take an interesting turn.

While this was not my favorite book in the series, I do like this series. Alex is a flawed hero who often acts first then thinks later. And there is an excellent sense of ambiance, especially in the books set during the brutal winters in the U.P. You get a real feeling for the isolation of life so far from civilization.
