Under the Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy Horan

I remember reading A Child's Garden of Verses and Treasure Island as a kid. But I didn't know much about the author, Robert Louis Stevenson. It turns out that he led quite the life. And married quite the woman.
Under the Wide and Starry Sky tells the story of the relationship between RLS and his wife, Fanny, as they traveled the world together.

Fanny always struggled to be more than just a nurse and helpmate to her sickly husband. She had dreamed of being "a creative" herself, and tried her hand at both painting and writing. But her talents were always to be overshadowed by his. And she was never taken as seriously as she wanted to be. However, she did lead a truly amazing life--from the silver mines in the western US, to art classes in Paris, and a large plantation in Samoa. Though I thought it might have benefited from a little judicious editing in the second half, it's a fascinating book.
