The Bone Tree by Greg Iles

The Bone Tree is the sequel to Natchez Burning--and you really have to read Natchez first because this one picks up right where Natchez ends, in the middle of several nerve-jangling plots.

Natchez Burning left a lot of loose ends dangling, which Bone Tree ties up. But there's still enough of a cliffhanger in this one that I can't wait for the 3rd book in the trilogy.

Some of the basic plots from Natchez that are picked up in Bone Tree include the death of black nurse Viola Turner, corruption in the Louisiana state police, the doings of the psychotic Knox family, and an attempt to unravel who really killed John F. Kennedy. And many of the current events are inextricably linked to things that happened in the tumultuous 60s in the South. Despite the length (800+ pages), it is an engrossing read that I couldn't put down.
