Emma by Alexander McCall Smith

I am an Alexander McCall Smith fan but not a huge Jane Austen fan. So while a true Jane Austen fan would dislike the updated Emma because it wasn't the original, I objectively didn't like it very much.

The plot sticks pretty closely to that of the original, with Emma interfering in and managing everyone's love life but her own. But there was hardly any mention of Emma's "romance" with George. Jane Fairfax sort of popped in and out without much explanation. And there was way too much time spent on Emma's father's germ phobia. Then everything is sort of wrapped up too neatly at the end.

I'd say stick with the original Emma if you like Jane Austen.
And stick with AMcSmith's "Precious" series or "Isabelle" series, which showcase his writing much better.

As my sister the English major put it: Why do people keep feeling the need to rewrite Jane Austen?
