Sheltering Rain by Jo Jo Moyes

Let me preface this by saying I'm a big Jo Jo Moyes fan. One Plus One is one of my favorite recent reads. That being said, I didn't love Sheltering Rain, one of her earlier works.

The story starts in Hong Kong in the 50s, where socially awkward Joy meets and is swept off her feet by dashing military man Edward.  The action then switches to London in the present, into the lives of Joy's daughter Kate and her daughter Sabine. Kate is sort of a serial dater and after her latest romance ends, she sends Sabine off to Ireland, to stay with Joy, the grandmother she barely knows. (Kate and her parents have been rather on the outs since Kate got pregnant as a teen.)

Sabine does not love living in rural Ireland, where she has no computer, no friends, an ailing grandfather, and a not-exactly-warm-and-fuzzy grandma. But gradually she comes to feel at home.
Then Kate comes to visit, which throws everyone off kilter. It's not a bad story but it moves kind of slowly.

If you're new to Jo Jo Moyes, her One Plus One or Me Before You are much better.
