Devil's Bridge by Linda Fairstein

This is the latest in the excellent Alex Cooper series. In case you're new to this series, Alex is a lawyer for the DA's office in NYC. As this book opens, she is having a supremely bad day in court and in her office. And then things take a turn for the worse when she gets into what she thinks is the Uber car she ordered and vanishes. Most of the story is told from the perspective of detective Mike Chapman, Alex's long-time friend, work colleague and, most recently, romantic partner.

Mike is working a homicide on the night shift so at first he doesn't realize Alex is missing. Then many of her coworkers and friends assume she has gone off to chill out after a fight with Mike. But Mike knows there was no fight and indeed they have made plans for the weekend, so all is good on that front. But he and his partner Mercer become increasingly concerned that someone Alex has put in prison intends to harm her. Then a comment from a psychiatrist makes Mike wonder if maybe someone is trying to hurt him through Alex. Everything comes to a head in a wild scene underneath the George Washington Bridge.

It's a good summer page-turner and once again, I learned something new about the history of NYC.
