Hush Money by Chuck Greaves

Hush Money is the first in the entertaining Jack McTaggert (lawyer) series, which I read totally out of order.

Jack is working for a big law firm in Pasadena and has to take on a case involving a rich socialite and a dead championship horse called Hush Puppy. In the course of his journey, he meets a cute girl, tangles with some crazy Asians, uncovers corruption in his firm, and has a lot of car problems. And he does it all with a quick quip and dogged persistence to find out what really happened to Hush Puppy and who was behind it.
