The Promise by Robert Crais and the Martian by Andy Weir

It's been a little crazy over the holidays so I haven't had time to post. But I did read 2 good books recently.

The Promise is the latest in the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series and includes Scott James and his police dog Maggie from an earlier stand-alone book by Crais. Elvis gets hired to find a woman whose only son was killed by terrorists. He ends up watching a house where one of the son's friends supposedly lived. Only it turns out that a killer and a lot of explosives are there now. Scott is the only witness to get a good look at the killer, which puts him and Maggie in danger. The police think Elvis is somehow involved so they're all over him. And he begins to wonder if the client who hired him to find the missing mother is on the up and up. It's a good story with plenty of twists.

The Martian is the book that the new Matt Damon movie (which I wanted to see but missed) is based on. Mark Watney is part of a crew on a Mars exploration mission. The rest of the crew thinks he was killed in a sandstorm on Mars and leaves him behind. Only he's not dead--just very, very alone.
Personally, I would have panicked. But Mark is nothing if not industrious. He figures out how to grow a food supply, keep his oxygen working, and even communicate with NASA. The problem is that it will take a long time to get someone back to Mars to rescue him and his supplies may run out before then. I love the character of Mark, who has a scientist's mind and a wacky sense of humor
that together manage to keep him alive despite all the odds against him. I would still like to see the movie but I do highly recommend the book.

Happy New Year!
