Banquet of Consequences by Elizabeth George

I've been a big fan of the Inspector Linley/Sargent Havers series since the beginning. And this one was good, though I thought it could have used a little judicious editing about 2/3 of the way through.

Barbara Havers is still in the dog house after her adventure in Italy. The Chief would do anything to get rid of her, so Barbara is doing everything she can to toe the line. But Linley feels it's stifling her natural detecting abilities. When a famous feminist author turns up dead in another town, he convinces the boss to let Barbara (accompanied by Winston) investigate. Soon the author's editor is deathly ill--and saved only by Barbara's quick actions. Barbara and Winston have a suspect but proving it is turning out to be very difficult indeed.

There are some funny scenes when Dorothea, the Chief''s secretary, decides that Barbara needs a makeover and a man to make her life complete. And some very dark scenes when we find out what was behind the murder. A good book, but not my favorite in the series. Still, I can't wait to see what happens next with Barbara and the Inspector. And will Dorothea really convince Barbara to try tap lessons?
