Surrender, New York by Caleb Carr

Criminal psychologist Trajan (L.T.) Jones and his friend Michael Li (a trace evidence expert) have moved to the town of Surrender in upstate New York after alienating the powers that be in New York City on a previous case. They get called in to advise when a teenage girl is found dead. Then they find out that she is not the first young person to turn up dead in Surrender. And soon they're caught up in something bigger--and more depressing--than they could possibly have imagined.

It's a good story, though a little convoluted. The book is 600 pages long and might have benefited from a little judicious editing. But Jones and Li are appealing characters--as is Lucas, a young teenage boy who gets drawn into their efforts to figure out what is going on in Surrender. Plus there's a very unusual pet that plays a big role in the story.
