The Hanging Girl by Jusse Adler-Olsen

I love this quirky Scandinavian series about a ragtag team working on cold cases in Denmark. That being said, I thought this particular book kind of bogged down toward the middle--though it did pick up toward the end.

Carl Morck, head of Dept Q, gets a call from a cop on a remote Danish island who is trying to convince Morck to get his team involved in investigating a 20-year-old death--of a beautiful young girl who was the victim of a hit and run and end up hanging in a tree. The death was ruled accidental but the cop thinks it might have been intentional and he has devoted his career to proving that. When Morck declines to take the case, the cop kills himself during his own retirement party, which forces Morck and his team to get involved. So far so good, but then we get this strange subplot about a weird cult of the sun led by a charismatic leader--and it takes a long time--for us and them--to figure out what this all has to do with the hanging girl.

Still I do love the characters of Morck--whose personal life is a mess, the mysterious Assad--who seems to possess a very eclectic skillset, and the highly emotional Rose. So I do look forward to their next case.
