The Third Victim by Lisa Gardner

I finally found the first book in the compelling Rainie/Quincy series by Lisa Gardner. (I had accidentally started at the end of the series.)

In Third Victim, Rainie is working as a cop in idyllic Bakersville, Oregon. One day, she gets a frantic call from the local middle school that there is a shooter on the grounds. When she gets there, Rainie finds a dead teacher and 2 dead little girls--and her boss's son, Danny, holding a gun. Because the police force is so small, the state police are called in then an FBI profiler named Quincy enters the picture.

The town quickly turns on the top cop and his family. But Rainie isn't so sure that Danny is guilty--or at least that he acted alone. She and Quincy try to unravel the mystery and find out what really happened at the school that day. Quincy is also trying to find out the deep secrets that Rainie is hiding from her past while grappling with family issues of his own.

It's a good, multifaceted mystery that holds your attention to the very end.
