Sous Chef by Michael Gibney

Sous-Chef provides a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on in the kitchen of a popular NYC restaurant. And I have to say, it makes me never want to be a chef. The beginning was a little slow, as we see our sous-chef setting up for the day. But then the orders start rolling in--and keep rolling in, faster and faster. And the kitchen has to maintain its well-honed choreography to keep up. When one of the cooks, who is suffering from a hangover, starts falling behind, it threatens to throw the whole system out of whack.

It's clear that there is a lot of stress in the kitchen--trying to make sure the prep is complete, the cooking is perfect, the head chef is satisfied, the orders are filled quickly, the customers are satisfied. And  there's the pressure of trying to have a personal life despite the crazy hours while trying to move up in the system, to prove that one day you'll be good enough to be the head chef.

It's a fascinating look at what goes on in a restaurant kitchen and makes you have a whole new respect for the people who work there.
