Brush Back by Sara Paretsky

I stumbled across this VI Warshawki novel from 2015 recently and it is quite the gripping story.

An old high school beau contacts (private eye) VI and asks her to look into an old murder case--that of his mother killing his sister. When she starts taking a closer look, all hell breaks loose. She uncovers all sorts of political shenanigans--the discovery of which is not sitting too well with certain higher ups. Complicating matters is the fact that the teenage daughter of an old friend of her beloved (and deceased) cousin, hockey star Boom Boom Warshawki, is staying with her--and young Bernie decides to get involved in the case--putting both her own and VI's life in danger.

It's an interesting look at a part of Chicago that doesn't usually get a lot of attention--the neighborhood on the south side where the old steel mills used to be. The gritty, rundown setting is the perfect ambiance for this story of death and political corruption.
