Exit Strategy by Steve Hamilton

I love  Steve Hamilton's "Alex McKnight" series set in northern Michigan. So I thought I'd give his new Nick Mason series a chance. It's an intriguing premise--a man who trades away his future freedom to get out of prison early. And the books are good. But I still like the Alex McKnight series better for some reason.

That being said, Exit Strategy is a very fast read. Nick continues to follow the orders of evil Darius Cole (which mostly consists of killing people). He wants out of this life, but is worried about the safety of his ex-wife and beloved daughter if he tries to escape Cole and his minions. Then he thinks he has come up with an ideal "exit strategy" for himself and his fellow "slave" and roommate, Diana. But will it work? There's an intriguing twist at the end of the story.

This series kind of reminds me of the excellent "John Rain" series by Barry Eisler. John is a Japanese-American hit man who wants out of the life but finds that no one wants to let him leave.
