The Late Show by Michael Connelly

The Late Show is the first in a new series by the writer of the excellent Harry Bosch series. The "star" is Renee Ballard, a feisty cop whose career was derailed by her claims of sexual harassment against her former boss and who now finds herself working on the overnight shift. One night she comes across both a badly beaten prostitute who had apparently been held captive for several days--and a nightclub shooting. While her partner is more about just getting through the shift and going home to his sick wife, Ballard really wants to solve both of these crimes. And her efforts could get her in a lot of trouble personally and professionally.

Renee Ballard is an intriguing character with a good crime-solver's mind and compassion for the victims. It will be interesting to see where this series goes next. Good read for the last weeks of summer.
