George & Lizzie by Nancy Pearl

G & L is basically the story of the marriage of two very different people. George had a happy childhood with two warm and loving parents. Lizzie had a miserable childhood with 2 very cold, distant psychologist parents. Lizzie is trying to get over a high school act of defiance against her parents that continues to haunt her. She is also trying to get over losing what she thinks is the love of her life. George and Lizzie meet at the University of Michigan and he falls madly in love with her--while she falls madly in love with his mother, who is everything her mother is not. Can this marriage survive?

You can see why someone would want to marry George, who is generous and patient and stable. It's not so clear why someone would want to marry Lizzie--who seems fractious and aimless--and who keeps hearing voices in her head, which really made me think she might need professional help. (I also wondered why her two best friends stuck by her since she was kind of a Debbie Downer and ignored all the good advice they were giving her. But friendship is like that.)

Anyway, this would be an interesting choice for a book group discussion.
