Lives Laid Away by Stephen Mack Jones

Lives is the sequel to the excellent August Snow. August is a vet/former cop who won a big settlement when he sued the city of Detroit and is now focusing on rehabbing his neighborhood in the Mexicantown neighborhood near the Ambassador Bridge to Canada. A young woman falls/jumps off said bridge and the medical examiner asks August to help him find out who she was. That sets August and his best friend Tomas off on a journey through the seedy underbelly of Detroit and environs--and in conflict with ICE agents, who are trying to scoop up undocumented aliens in his neighborhood. We are introduced to two very memorable sidekicks--a feisty teenage computer expert named Lucy and a mysterious British neighbor with a man bun, who seems to possess some interesting skills.

This was an engrossing story but be warned that there is a lot of violence on these pages.
