The New Iberia Blues by James Lee Burke

James Lee Burke is a beautiful writer and I love the characters of Dave Robicheaux, his daughter Alafair, and, his best friend Clete. His descriptions of Louisiana are so vibrant that you can feel the humidity in the air and smell the chicory coffee. But my oh my these books are full of violence.

Iberia starts with a dead woman floating on a cross and ends with a shootout--with numerous other killings and acts of violence and betrayal in between. I really feel like I need some fluffy chick lit to get those images out of my head. And I do wonder how old Dave is supposed to be. In this book, he calls to mind a happy memory from the 1940s, which would make him a little old to be a working detective.
