The Rule of Law by John Lescroart

Rule of Law  starts with the beginning of the reign of the new DA, Ron Jameson--a power-hungry, vengeful man. It also picks up a story line from a previous book involving a shootout at a pier that led to the death of a cop and several other people--which could bring big trouble to the heads of defense attorney Dismas Hardy and his best friend, now retired cop, Abe Glitsky. The story starts with Dismas's long-time secretary Phyllis being arrested as an accessory to murder and being mistreated by the DA's investigators. Hardy wants revenge--then the DA wants Hardy's head.At the same time, two hardworking cops are trying to figure out who really killed the illegal alien whose death Phyllis was supposedly involved with--and the female cop is trying to prove that the DA himself belongs in jail. There's a lot going on but it all moves at a rapid clip in this page-turner. I was happy to see that Dismas still managed to squeeze in his date nights with his lovely wife, despite all the turmoil in his life.
