Cemetery Road by Greg Iles

After his beloved brother Adam died, life was never the same for Marshall McEwen. So he took the first opportunity to leave his Mississippi roots behind him and become a successful journalist based in Washington DC. But when his estranged father becomes seriously ill,  Marshall heads back home to help out his mother--and there he comes upon the love of his life, Jet Talal--who is now married to his boyhood best friend, Paul.Unfortunately for Paul, both Jet and Marshall realize the spark is still there.

At the same time, a huge Chinese paper mill is in the works, thanks to a powerful group of movers and shakers called the Bienville Poker Club. The paper mill will save the economy of the town. But Marshall, ever a reporter, realizes there is something fishy going on. And when one of his dearest friends in town turns up dead, he begins investigating--which leads to a world of trouble for Marshall, his friend Nadine, and Jet.

This book is nearly 600 pages long--and I stayed up way too late last night finishing it.
It turns out that Jet is the most interesting and complicated character in the story. It's often hard to know what she's really up to or where her loyalties really lie. It's a compelling read.
