One Good Deed by David Baldacci

I normally love David Baldacci's books. This one took me a while to get into, though I liked it more at the end. It's the late 1940s and our hero is a man called Archer, who has just been released from prison for a crime he didn't commit (after serving honorably in the military during WW2). As part of his parole, he has to stay in Poca City, which is largely under the control of a businessman called Hank Pittelman. Archer gets hired by Pittelman to try to retrieve a Cadillac that was used as collateral for a loan given to a seemingly prosperous farmer named Lucas Tuttle. Tuttle says he'll pay the loan back if Archer can get his daughter Jackie away from Hank (whose mistress she is). Soon Archer is facing threats from some fellow parolees, has caught the eye of 2 women in town, and is under suspicion of murder. It seems like this might be the beginning of a new series, with Archer as a PI.

This one wasn't bad but I have to say I prefer the Will Robie series, the King & Maxwell series, and the Memory Man series.
