The Gilded Hour by Sara Donati

Gilded tells the story of two female physicians--Anna and Sophia Savard (who are somehow related, perhaps cousins?) in New York City just after the Civil War. They face a lot of challenges, such as male doctors having no use for them and a rabid politician who is out to jail them if they even mention the word "contraception" to any of their patients.

Sophia is in love with her childhood friend, Cap, who is dying of consumption. And
Anna falls in love with an Italian-American cop named Jack, whom she meets while helping out with some orphans. Then the two of them, at first separately, start noticing women dying from badly botched abortions, and both start seeking the person who may be responsible.

It's a good story with likeable characters and sheds light on an interesting time in medical history.
I discovered that there is a sequel called Where the Light Enters, which is next up on my Kindle queue.
