Our Malady by Timothy Snyder

Snyder started writing this book after he had a series of horrendous healthcare experiences. First, his appendicitis was misdiagnosed in a hospital in Germany. Then his appendix burst, which was misdiagnosed in a hospital in Florida. Then his life-threatening sepsis and liver infection were misdiagnosed at the hospital in New Haven, CT. He had an unnecessary spinal tap that was interrupted when the doctor's cell phone buzzed mid-procedure. And he spent an agonizing, delirious night in the ER in New Haven trying to get anyone on staff to read the paperwork he had brought from the hospital in Florida. All of these experiences--and the advent of the Corona epidemic--made him re-evaluate the state of healthcare in America. And he does not have good things to say about the system, though he does have kind words for many of the hospital staff. It's a short but thought-provoking read.
