The Borrower by Rebecca Makkai

This is a quirky little book about a librarian in Missouri who is trying to save a boy named Ian whose parents are trying to turn him from probably gay to straight. Ian is a frequent visitor at the local library, where Miss Hull is the children's librarian. His mother wants him to read only a very restricted type of literature, which is not what book-loving Ian wants to read at all. But Miss Hull is his ally. One morning she comes into work early and finds that Ian has run away from home and spent the night at the library. And before she realizes what's happening, the two of them are setting off on a wacky road trip, while she tries to figure out how to save him from his parents and Pastor Bob, with whom they are working to save Ian from himself. While the story is pretty implausible, the two main characters are definitely memorable.
