The Cactus League by Emily Nemens

Have you ever seen the movie Crash? It tells a set of intertwining stories, but takes a while for you to figure out how they're intertwined.  The Cactus League reminded me of that. It starts out with an old pitching coach and his wife returning to their Arizona home for spring training--only to find out that a family of squatters has been living there and has stolen their 2 cars. Then we meet a baseball groupie named Tami, some of the baseball players' wives, a sports agent with health issues and the woman he hires as his assistant, one of the owners, and the star of the team--Jason Goodyear. Jason is a good guy and great player but he has a gambling addiction that is causing his life to spin out of control. In different chapters we meet each of these characters, and eventually see how their lives are tangled up in the lives of the other characters. There is an unforgettable ending that leaves you wondering what the future holds for Jason, Alex, Tami, Herb, and the rest.
