Rock the Boat by Beck Dorey-Stein

I really enjoyed Beck Dorey-Stein's first book, the nonfiction From The Corner of the Oval, about her years in the Obama White House. Her newest, Rock the Boat, goes in a totally different direction.

PR maven Kate has been with rich doctor Thomas for 12 years. She's convinced he's going to propose but instead he breaks up with her. Her family packs up her stuff from her life in NYC and takes her back home to the Jersey Shore. At the same time, rich guy Miles, who grew up in the same small town, heads home to convince his mother that he is the rightful heir for her company (after she told him she was thinking of picking someone else). Both Kate and Miles are friends with Ziggy, who never left their small town. He is a plumber/contractor whose beloved father, Zeke, has recently died and he's floundering, trying to keep their business going. Ziggy asks Miles for help figuring out his father's books for the business and setting up some kind of accounting system. Miles looks at the books and realizes that Zeke was keeping a big secret from his family--and Miles isn't sure what to do about it.

Rock the Boat relates the story of the summer the three of their lives come into contact for the first time in years and what happens to their friendships as all three trying to figure out what they really want in life.

I liked the unique setting and the friendships. Good summer read.
