Stone's Throw by Mike Lupica

 This is the latest Jesse Stone novel (a series originally written by Robert Parker but now ably handled by Mike Lupica). The Throw is a beautiful piece of undeveloped land in Paradise that the Lawton family is now ready to sell. Two shady bidders want to buy it, each to build a casino. Not everyone in the town is in favor of this plan, including a group of tree huggers led by Ben and his girlfriend Blair. Neil the mayor is also opposed--and suddenly turns up dead. It looks like a suicide but Jesse doesn't think it was. Then Ben turns up dead. And there is suddenly a lot of out-of-town muscle hanging around Paradise and causing trouble. Despite many threats to his safety and that of his police force, Jesse is determined to find out who killed Neil and Ben and what is really going on with The Throw.

Good story, fast pace.
