A Game of Fear by Chas Todd

This is the latest in the compelling Inspector Rutledge series, featuring a shell-shocked Scotland Yard detective just after World War I. Rutledge's newest case takes him off to Essex, site of a mansion built from a former abbey and near the site of an airfield from the war. The lady of the mansion, Lady Benson, thinks she sees a murder while looking out of her window one night. And she thinks the murderer strongly resembles an ace pilot from the war that she had befriended--who died in a car crash during the war.

Rutledge thinks someone was trying to get Lady Benson away from the mansion to look for something but neither of them can figure out what. And he's convinced that the men who worked at and flew out of the old airfield are somehow connected to the mysterious goings-on.

The book has good ambiance--a creepy old house in the dark, an abandoned airfield, a couple of disappearances. It makes for an enjoyable read with enough twists and turns to keep things interesting.

There is a sad but touching note at the beginning of the book marking the passing of the mother half of the mother-son writing duo that is/was Charles Todd.
