Our American Friend by Anna Pitoniak

The main character in Friend bears a startling resemblance  to a certain very recent first lady. Her name is Lara Caine and she's married to a wildly divisive rich man who has been elected president. She stays very much under the radar so no one knows much about her or what she thinks about her husband's controversial policy decisions. Then one day, she calls Sofie Morse, an American journalist, and tells her she wants Sofie to write her biography for her. Sofie is reluctant but can see that this could be the scoop of the century so she agrees. And soon Sofie learns that Lara was born in Russia but spent much of her childhood in Paris, where her father was a diplomat (and secret KGB agent). Then Lara tells Sofie about her one true love, Sasha, who had a profound impact on her life before his untimely and suspicious death. The more Sofie gets sucked into Lara's life, the more she wonders what Lara is really up to. Which turns out to be a good question.

It's an interesting spin on recent events. One does wonder what the recent resident of the White House would think of this book.
