What Happened to the Bennetts? by Lisa Scottoline

 The Bennett family is driving home after daughter Allison's soccer game when 2 men try to carjack them. The family dog gets loose. One of the carjackers fires his gun. Allison is hit. Then one carjacker shoots the other and takes off. While the family is waiting for Allison's surgery to finish, the FBI shows up at the hospital and tells the family they have to go into witness protection because the carjackers belonged to a crime family and the shooter is spreading the rumor that Jason (the dad) killed the other carjacker, who it turns out was the son of the local crime boss--and the crime boss wants revenge. While the family is in hiding, Jason begins to suspect that there is a lot more going on than anyone is telling them--and he decides to do something about it.

Okay, it was a little implausible but it was a good story. You really feel for this family, whose lives have been totally turned upside down through no fault of their own.
