A Sunlit Weapon by Jacqueline Winspear

This is the latest installment in the always engrossing Maisie Dobbs saga. Investigator/psychologist Maisie is now married to American intelligence operative Mark Scott and the two are trying to keep their careers separate. But she gets involved in a case that turns out to be related to something he's working on, and they have to join forces.

Jo Hardy is a British pilot who ferries planes around Britain--taking them in for repairs, or moving them to where they're needed most for the RAF. One day, someone shoots at her plane. She goes back to investigate later and finds a bound and gagged Black American soldier, Matthias, proclaiming that his friend, Charles, another American soldier, has gone missing and is danger. Jo gets Matthias out of there then gets word that Maisie may be able to help her figure out who shot at her, what happened to Matthias, and where the missing Charles may be. And so begins a very convoluted case that is just the tip of the iceberg of a really nefarious plot.

At the same time, Maisie is worried about her daughter, Anna, who is being bullied at school. And her partner Billy is worried about his two sons who are off fighting in the war. It's always nice to check in on Maisie and company and see what is happening in their lives as time goes by.
