A Winter in New York by Josie Silver

Iris and her mother were all the family each of them had. And when her mother dies, Iris gets entangled with a nasty, manipulative man, Adam. She finally gathers the courage to leave him (and London behind) and heads to New York City, site of some of her mother's favorite memories and the scene of some of their favorite rom/com movies. At first she's terrified that Adam will find her, but gradually she builds a new life. Then one day, she passes a gelato store that looks familiar to her for some reason--then realizes she has seen that storefront before, in a photo of her mother's. She goes in and meets Gio, who's running the place and is in a state because his uncle, the keeper of the secret family gelato recipe, is in the hospital and can't remember the recipe.Iris realizes that she has seen a copy of the recipe scrawled on a paper napkin, that was one of her mother's most treasured mementos. And soon she is drawn into Gio's life, while feeling guilty about the secrets she's keeping.

It's a good story with likeable characters--and right now I could really go for some homemade gelato.
