The Cliff's Edge by Chas. Todd

Cliff's Edge is the latest in the Bess Crawford series. Bess was a combat nurse during WWI. Now she's back living at home and kind of bored. She's asked to help Lady Beatrice recover from gallbladder surgery and agrees. Then Lady Beatrice receives a telegram saying her godson Gordon has been hurt and to come quickly. Since she can't go herself, she sends her companion, Lillian, and Bess. It turns out that Gordon and his friend Frederick fell off a cliff. Gordon was injured and Frederick died. Now a hostile cop has decided that Gordon murdered Frederick. The widow is acting strangely. Frederick's brother is very antagonistic. And a strange man with a vicious dog keeps popping up. When a woman gets murdered near Gordon's estate,  Gordon is the main suspect--though he insists he killed neither victim. Then someone tries to kill Bess, who is really wishing she had just said no when asked to help Lady Beatrice. There were a lot of characters to keep track of but it was a good story.
