Strangers in Time by David Baldacci
I'll start by saying I checked this book out of the library on Saturday morning and finished reading it on Sunday night.
The setting is London during the Blitz. Charlie is a 14-year old orphan living with his beloved grandma, who is working hard to keep a roof over their heads. Molly is a 15 year old for a wealthier family. Her parents shipped her off to the countryside at the beginning of the war. When her father abruptly stops sending money to her host family, she decides it's time to return home. But when she gets there, all she finds is her nanny. Molly discovers that her mother is in a mental health facility in Cornwall and her father left the house one day and never returned. Charlie and Molly's paths cross while she is trying to find her father. And both of their paths cross with widower Ignatius Oliver, who owns a bookshop. Since they effectively have no one else, the three become a sort of support system/family for each other as the bombs keep falling.
The cops are after Charlie for something that wasn't his fault. Molly is frantically trying to track down her parents. And both Molly and Charlie wonder what Ignatius is really up to as he keeps meeting with a mysterious man at odd hours. Couldn't put it down.
