An Enemy in the Village by Martin Walker

This is the latest in the charming Bruno Chief of Police series. It starts when Bruno discovers the body of a woman in a car, evidently a victim of suicide. He begins to investigate and suddenly finds himself the focus of a lot of negative comments and personal attacks. (Which is a little hard to believe considering how beloved Bruno is in small St Denis, but it does add a little dramatic tension.) Anyway, while investigating, Bruno meets Laura, one of the business partners of the dead woman--and the two feel an instant spark, enhanced by the fact that she owns a dog just like Bruno's beloved Balzac. I was happy to see Bruno move on from Isabel, with whom he had no future. And happy to see Bruno's many supporters stand up for him when so many negative things are being said about him. A worthy addition to a long-running series.
