The Waiting by Michael Connelly

Renee Ballard, who heads the cold cases unit of the LAPD, loves surfing to relax. One day after surfing, she discovers that someone has stolen her badge and gun from her car. If she tells her boss, she could lose her job. So she sets out to track down her missing badge--and calls on her mentor, Harry Bosch, to help. They uncover a sinister plot and have to call in an FBI friend for help. At the same time, Harry's daughter Maddie, also a cop, volunteers to work with the cold case squad and tells Renee she thinks she might have solved the infamous Black Dahlia murder from the 1940s due to something she found in an abandoned storage locker.

I love Harry Bosch and am a little worried that Connelly might be planning on killing him off soon. But I was glad he played an important role in this tale. It's an engrossing story with interesting twists and turns.  I look forward to Renee's (and hopefully Harry's) next adventure.
