Some Bright Nowhere by Ann Packer

When Claire is diagnosed with breast cancer, husband Eliot is there for her. And when the cancer metastasizes to her lungs and bones, Eliot is there for her. So imagine Eliot's dismay to find out that, as his wife's remaining days begin to dwindle, she would prefer to be cared for by 2 girlfriends instead of her long-time husband.

True, Eliot is not a great communicator. But he has been a good provider and a loyal, dedicated husband. So he reluctantly gives in to Claire's request and moves out. While Eliot isn't perfect, he got my sympathy because the more we find out about Claire, the less I liked her. The scene that cemented my feelings was when Eliot, after spending hours building an IKEA bookshelf for one of the girlfriends, goes to visit Claire, only to find that she and her friends have left for Maine--and didn't even leave a note for him.

It is a thought-provoking book, which would probably be a great choice for a book club.
