Three Days in June by Anne Tyler

 Gail's day starts with her finding out that she's not going to get the promotion she was expecting when her boss decides to retire--and even worse, the new hire is bringing his own assistant, so she's out of a job. Her daughter is getting married that weekend and Gail's ex, Max, shows up on her doorstep with a big cat in a cage and no place to stay for the wedding. So he ends up in Gail's guest room. Then her daughter tells Gail that the daughter's fiance may have cheated on her--causing Gail to wonder if the wedding will even happen now. This woman has a lot on her plate. It's a quick read as we see how Gail deals with all the crises spinning around her and faces decisions that could impact the rest of her life.
