Rescue by Anita Shreve

We had a little blizzard this week in the Windy City and everything kind of shut down for a day. So it was a good time to curl up with a book. I spent the day with my nose in Rescue by Anita Shreve, which one of my friends had lent me. Webster is a solid, dependable EMT who's called to the scene of an accident. There he rescues Sheila, who has crashed her car after driving drunk. He's attracted to her wildness, she's attracted to his stability and before you know it, they're married with a baby on the way. But soon, her wild side is bubbling back to the surface as she tires of life in small-town Vermont. And before you know it, Webster is a single father. The years go by and Webster realizes he now has to rescue his teenage daughter, who seems to be heading down the same alcohol-fueled path as her mother.

Though there's not a lot of action, Rescue is an interesting character study. Webster wants to save everyone, but can't. Sheila wants to change her life but can't. And Rowan is not sure exactly what she wants. A quick read for a snowy day.
