Come Home by Lisa Scottoline

What is a family? And do family ties continue even after divorce breaks up the family? That is the question Lisa Scottoline asks in Come Home. Jill Farrow is a pediatrician, a widow, and the mother of one daughter. She is also the ex-stepmom of 2 girls. When stepdaughter Abby shows up drunk late one night, Jill's maternal instincts kick in. Her new fiance, Sam, however, is not so welcoming. Abby tells Jill that her father is dead and she's convinced it was murder. She begs Jill to help her prove it. Soon, Jill is torn between trying to help Abby and trying to appease her fiance. She also finds that Abby may have been right about her father, which puts Jill's own life in danger. The story moves right along. And you feel for Jill, who's trying to be a good mother, doctor, fiancee and detective. I had problems with the character of Sam, however. He loves Jill's daughter, Megan, but insists that there is no room in their lives for the now orphaned Abby. And he's willing to call off the wedding if Jill doesn't agree with him. He does a complete 360 later in the story--which kind of gave me whiplash--and would have made me think twice about marrying the guy. But that's just me. It's a good book but it's not my favorite Lisa Scottoline. I prefer her series about the all-female Philly law firm featuring Bennie and Mary and the gang, which are good stories told with a dash of humor.
