The Secret River by Kate Grenville

Will Thornhill is a riverman in London in the 1800s. He's married to Sal, the girl of his dreams. And while they'll never be rich, life is pretty good--until Will gets caught stealing part of a load of expensive lumber that he's shipping and is sentenced to hang. Through the intercession of one of his clients, that sentence is changed--and Will and his family are shipped off to Australia, where he is to serve his sentence.

Sal is soon counting the days till they can go home but Will slowly falls in love with Australia and can see that the family will have a much brighter future there. It's easy to become a landowner in this new colony--but the natives are not so eager for the settlers to take over the land they have lived on for years. (It's very reminiscent of the stories of the American West, where the settlers and the Indians fought over the land)

The Secret River is an interesting story about a basically good man who makes some very questionable choices. It does make you think about how much you're willing to give up to achieve your dreams.
