The Engagements by J Courtney Sullivan

The diamond ring, now it's a symbol of everlasting love (or as they say in the ads A Diamond is Forever). But that wasn't always so. The NW Ayers ad agency held the DeBeers Diamond account for several decades and made the diamond ring an accepted part of the engagement/wedding ritual.

The Engagements starts with the story of the copywriter who came up with the line A Diamond is Forever as well as many of the most memorable DeBeers ads. Then the story moves on to various couples and the role a diamond ring played in their lives. You have to pay attention because the storylines keep bouncing around but eventually you get to know the many characters: James and Sheila--a paramedic who can't get a break and his devoted wife Sheila, Evelyn and Gerald who are drawn together by the death of a friend, Kate and Dan--a couple raising a child together with no plans to marry, and PJ and Delphine--an American violinist and the married French woman he sweeps off her feet while on tour. It's a fascinating look at love and marriage told from varying perspectives.
